Kathleen and I got married. That's the happy news! But when we got home after our honeymoon, I went out to get the car and all the air had been let out of all of my tires! And guess who did it?! The Vulcan Thai Cafe!

I rushed home tonight after a hard day's work at my contract job in SF to pick up Kathleen at the Bart station so we could get some groceries. We got home super late last night and haven't been able to be at home for very long yet. But when I went out to my car I saw that all the tires were flat. I was so mad! I thought it might have been a prankster... or could it have been the Thai Cafe?!

I felt bad when we rushed off to the airport and I had to move the car to one of the spots in front fo the Thai Cafe. There were no spots except for that one in front of the Thai Cafe, near one of their signs.

If you don't know it already, the "back lot" of the Vulcan is actually a public street. The city comes around and will tow your car for parking there for too long. They glued a green paper threatening to tow my classic 1962 Ford Falcon after I parked it out back for over a week when I got my new-ish car off craigslist so I could commute to my new job as a teacher. That sucked. It was embarrassing and took a long time to soak through the glue and get the paper off, even with a razor blade.

So anyway, the Vulcan Thai Cafe put up plastic signs a while back on that street to reserve spaces for their customers. That's fine during the day when most people go to work. I'm a freelancer and teacher, so I'm not on a 9-5 schedule like everyone else, and I usually bike instead of driving everyday. It's kind of hard for me to get back into a spot usually when it's late. Anyway, I felt bad for taking one of their spots, but we had to catch our plane and I hoped they wouldn't be too mad. It is a public street anyway.

Well, I guess they were mad! They let out the air in my tires by sticking small pebbles in the screw on covers for the tire valves and screwed them back on tight. I noticed the pebbles when I unscrewed them. Sneaky... and sleazy. Then one of the guys from the cafe came out. He told me he did it. I was shocked and horrified and already angry. Kathleen was waiting for me at the Bart station and I couldn't believe this! I told him how horrible this was and that we'd just come back from our honeymoon and this is what they did while we were away! I finally told him how mad I was and to f-off and just get the hell away from me. He wouldn't go away and started cussing at me. I was able to inflate my tires a little with an emergency kit I have in my car.

He came back out again and I told him to get away. Two other women were with him holding him off. I tried to tell them that he had done this to me while I was away on my honeymoon, after just getting married, happy times... That's when he jumped up and started screaming again and then he threatened to kill me.

I told Charley Bird about the whole thing. It's horrible. I don't want to live here anymore.

I think Kathleen waited for me at the Bart station for an hour.

hi folks,

does anyone have a spot in their space for me to live? i'm looking.

i've lived in two different warehouses over the past 5.5 years, one in north oakland and another in the Mission. I'm a Ph.D. student in Microbiology at UCB, studying photosynthetic microorganisms that are capable of producing hydrogen as a renewable fuel. I'm also a bookbinder, writer/poet, budding calligrapher, vegan (not snooty though), tea-drinker, volunteer (martin de porres soup kitchen in SF), garage-sale shopper/bicyclist. there is a lot more to me, but please write if you've got a space. i wouldn't take up much room, actually, and i think it's a darned shame that I have to try to put myself into a paragraph, perhaps a pot of tea might elucidate much more about who I am?

Oh, I neglected to mention my awesome, adventurous music collection. I've been on a quest to find adventurously beautiful music (often without words), and I've found a lot of great things along the way that I feel compelled to share with other lovers-of-art. If not, of course I can use headphones!

cheers!

...now that I have a question for them, that is.
I'd like to chat about collaborating or something with the Oakland Catholic Worker, which is trying to set up a bike-fixing-place with classes for recent Latin@ immigrants and refugees. I enjoy translating old english texts, reading anthropological theory, sewing, and flintknapping. I am looking for an uncluttered unit with space to improve my circus skills, and room enough to practice with a staff and create choreography. I'm not interested in a house with irresponsible drug users, the overly dramatic, and roommates struggling to make ends meet. I enjoy roommates who are are chill, nerdy, and who spend time together. and I slip into a southern accent when i get excited.

We're hoping to start a small art gallery there, and also hold art events. If anyone knows of such a space coming available in the next few months, please let us know. Must be legal (we don't want to get evicted soon!) and somewhat affordable as well... raw/industrial space is preferable.. minimal amenities are fine... we want a *real* warehouse art space, not some trendy loft.
We are all mature, responsible, and respectful... great neighbors and friends a must! We have no pets except quiet caged birds (doves).

I work in Emeryville for an event planning company and have a WONDEFUL doggie named Stinger though we just call him Boo most of the time. I notice that there are a lot of dogs around and I hope that Boo will have some playmates.

I hope to check out the Spin/Juggling Jams on weds with Greg and Co. and hope to meet some of you fine people there! I spin poi and I'm just learning to hoop. That shit is addicting!!!! Other then that I spend my free time travelling and doing BM regionals and of course the burn itself. I also do Ren faires though not as much as I used to. One of my addictions is costuming and I am working on this sweet Owl goddess piece for the burn. I also want to get back into bellydance. I was taking two classes a week but funds or lack thereof got in the way.

I'm now negotiating with Nancy to find a solution. I still need support at the next committee meeting on this topic.

Please come to this:
March 11, Tuesday, 3:30PM, City Hall-Hearing Room One, First Floor
This one is important, but it's in the middle of the day. I need as many people as I can get. Get there early, at 3. I'll do a Q and A, and a little strategy talk before we go in.

I'm looking for artists and craftspeople to come tell their stories about live/work spaces, and converting industrial spaces. If you have a lease on an illegal space, please bring a copy. We can black out your address and use the lease as evidence that residential leases are being handed out illegally. That will show the City that we're not to blame and can't be held responsible because we've been lied to about our spaces in many instances. If you have landlord horror stories, bring them too. And bring good stories about what goes right when 6 or 8 people move into an old building and create an incubator for thought, craft, art, beauty and friendship.

If enough people show up, we'll be able to do very good things for the Live/Work community.

Email me with questions. Or come to the Art Murmur tomorrow and talk to me. I'll be easy to spot.

Hello Oakland Arts Community.

I'm sending this out to all of you in hopes that you'll read it and pass it along. The city of Oakland is considering a measure that will hurt us if passed by banning all live/work that is not already 100% legal. Any of you who are in such space thus become far more vulnerable, and the creation of any such space will be stopped dead in its tracks.

I hope to spread the word and bring about some grass roots support at Planning Commission and City Council meetings. The last time I spoke at one of these meetings, I was the sole representative of the work/live community. I hope that at the next meeting there will be many more of us. Thus far the discussion has been dominated by either industrial property owners who are concerned about complaints from live/work users, or speculative residential developers who generally aren't interested in serving artists. This coming meeting is at City Hall on February 13th, at 7pm.

__________

Here is the issue, summarized as quickly as I can manage:

Oakland is redefining what is permitted in its industrial zones. Under the proposed new rules, up to 80% of the area that once allowed
work/live use will be lost. The motivation for the new rules seems to come from a couple of different concerns. First, industrial land owners and businesses feel threatened by the recent explosion in faux live/work condos in industrial areas. Industry is worried that the people in these developments will complain about noise, pollution and traffic, and make it difficult to do business in Oakland. Second, Oakland has been losing manufacturing and industrial jobs.

The city zoning staff and the industrial community seem to believe that they can improve their situation by banning all residence within
these industrial zones. What they have failed to realize is that legitimate work/live artists, craftspeople and tradesmen are not a
part of their problem. Our hybrid way of life is real, and most of us are just as engaged in high-impact activities as the industrial
community is. The proposal that is on the table needs to be changed to allow legitimate work/live to continue. We can't let them throw the baby out with the bath water (and us with it) by lumping all forms of live/work and live/work together and banning it altogether.

__________

Again, the next meeting on this topic at City Hall is on Wednesday, February 13th at 7pm. This process is quite far along, so there is an urgent need to mobilize and show that we have not been included the consideration of in this imminent, misguided action. It would be great if there was a place where we could meet beforehand to discuss a unified strategy for presenting at the meeting and for actions, so if any of you can host, I would greatly appreciate it. Otherwise, please just show up. The sooner we make ourselves heard, the sooner we can get results. The consequences for our community are serious if we don't turn this around.

Thanks,

As you know, Tribe has been having some issues lately. My apologies if this is a repeat listing.

My partner and I have a space available in our 2,500+ square foot live/work unit at the Sunshine Biscuit Factory. This is in the "artist's corridor" in East Oakland, not far from Vulcan Studios, and two blocks from Coliseum/Oakland Airport BART.

We are: A married couple in our early 30s. Wilja is an art student and works part time in the theatre industry. Cryptid is a therapeutic massage practitioner, dj, and works part time in the natural foods industry.

You are: An individual or stable couple. Mature, clean, responsible, and an excellent communicator. Able to participate in light cleaning duties including sweeping, dusting, taking out trash and washing your own dishes. We maintain a meat-free kitchen, so vegetarian or veggie-friendly is a huge plus. Pets are okay, but they must interview with our cats, M3a7 and Wheezle. Owning reliable transportation is a plus, since the neighborhood can be rough after dark. An interest in the arts and creative community is also a huge plus.

The unit itself is spacious, sunny, and divided into large common spaces and private rooms. Your room is a roughly 10'x10' space with a smaller walk-in closet or sleep chamber, and lots of natural light. There is an adjoining common space that I haven't measured but which is probably about 20'x25', which you are welcome to use exclusively as a work space. It is equipped with standard electrical outlets.

We also have a huge living room/kitchen, which takes up most of the total space.

We're asking $650 monthly rent for an individual, or $735 for a couple. The unit has a full kitchen with gas range, full bathroom, and rooftop access. We're in the south wing, so with no immediate neighbors it is generally a pretty quiet environment.

This is being offered as a 1-3 month (negotiable) sublet, simply because we're unsure of how long we'll be staying in the space. If it works out, there's always the possibility of you staying here in the long-term, but for now we're offering it for up to three months.

Although this is an "up-and-coming" region, having been here a couple of years means that our rent is slightly below market value for the area.

If this sounds like a good match, email Cryptid at attackmandibles@assassinbeetle.net, or Wilja at Wiljago@assassinbeetle.net.

I would really like to perform and I allready have some Puppets and masks created and ready to go. another option is, if you have allready signed up for the "how berkeley" parade, I can cancel my registration if I have to and join you.

I have paraded in alot of protests... at Burning Man, and with Bread and Puppet theater in Vermont, (through and internship) and more...
I am a percussionist / puppeteer / performer/visual artist who is working more clowning and dancing into my performances.

here is a link :
www.davidavidson.artistportfolio.net ---- art, puppets
www.myspace.com/summerhilltribal --------music
www.myspace.com/hoptripsoundscape

i have lots of ideas, and can improvise quickly. We could meet once or twice before and then parade at the end of the month.
I have some people who can show up and be extra hands but it would be GREAT to accompany someone who allready has a group, costumes and act together.
My troupe from this summer has moved there own ways now that fall has started, then I got sick, and now.... The show must GO on. : )
I am trying to use the spot I have reserved and ... I just want to have fun parading.... I would like to throw a puppet mask on... then dance and clown around. Please reply soon, as we should meet up this week or next and I need to contact the Parde people w/ changes.

some Options and possibilities:
dancing, acting, clowning, stilts, juggling, flags waving and spinnning, poi juggling, sorry no fire allowed in this specific parade, (not sure why)
I can make an animal costume... like on Fellini's CLOwns, the traditional 2 person cow or horse

and here are puppets and masks I allready have----- www.davidavidson.artistportfolio.net
davidavidson@gmail.com

I would be so happy if you helped me and I could help perform. I allready paid the fees for the parade and everythiing.

Sincerely, David Davidson

---------->Looking for PERFORMERS w/ act or costumes and skills to PArade "How Berkeley Can you Be?! -----The show must go on.
I would like to help you help me PARADE in How Berkeley?! Can you BE... Parade ...the show must go on

We have 2 structurally decent (but not terribly pretty) couches available for FREE for anyone who would be willing to pick them up and take them away this week. These couches would be great for a studio space. One is a light canary yellow and the other is a sort-of olive grey green. They are both pretty long and good for naps between projects. We got them from another Vulcanite when we first moved in 3 years ago and they have served us well. But we recently inherited a new (rather fancy) set and need to find room for the new ones. We are in #55. Please give us a call if you are interested: 510-261-7844 or send us an email: dprojx@dprojx.org

I've posted this various places in the Tribe community, but I wanted to put it here as well as our school is only about 1/2 a mile away from y'all. I want to make clear that MEN are also welcome to come and train here; I just happen to be promoting a women's class at the moment but if any guys out there want to come and check us out, please feel free to do so!

www.opendoorbjj.com

-------------------------------------------------------------

Women's Wrestling Class

Here's the deal...My partner and I started this BJJ Academy about a year ago. For me it was a really, really important thing that I felt I needed to do. In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the art I study, women are generally treated like second class citizens...and even the men are subjected to fairly constant physical and mental abuse so regularly it's not even considered abnormal. I always knew that it didnt HAVE to be that way, but until last year I really didnt know how I was going to get decent training if I wasn't willing to put up with the mysoginistic crap.

After having to deal with some ugliness that I wont go into...I scraped all the money I had together, and asked my boyfreind (a brownbelt at the time - a blackbelt now) if he would be willing to leave the Gracies and open an Academy with me instead. The Academy wouldn't be focused on taking really tough assholes and making them even tougher and meaner...it would be focused on teaching regular people how to live in the world without fear of physical intimidation.

I believe that everyone, regardless of age, gender, or physical aptitude, should be able to experience 'joyous aggression'. Every predatory mammal on the planet, cats, raccoons, bears, otters - they all wrestle with each other. Human beings also are naturally inclined to wrestle, but now this is usually only considered to be appropriate play for children to engage in...as adults our physical boundaries are such that that kind of close contact is only considered appropriate with those whom we have intimate relationships with. And that's really sad.

We have lost the ability to just allow ourselves to PLAY. The only times we allow ourselves to just enjoy being embodied is when we're eating, getting a massage, or having sex. We go to the gym because we HATE our body....not because we love it! That's why it's so hard to force yourself to go! Wrestling is the most intense physical workout there is, but because you're having so much fun and because you're so focused in the moment, you don't realize how hard your body is working until you collapse on the mat panting, laughing and drenched in sweat. While sports, dancing, and other martial arts forms can also all be considered physical play none give you the same experience of primal joy that wrestling does. None encourage you to to be stronger, more aggressive, more ferocious, more assertive, more fearless than you ever thought possible. For example: imagine wrestling a man who outweighs you by over 100 pounds, with him giving 100% in his attempt to get you to submit...and getting HIM to tap out instead. It takes a little while, but you CAN get there. And when you do it completely changes your feminine experience of being in the world. It changes HIS experience and understanding of the feminine as well.

And the very best thing is that in wrestling and BJJ, unlike other martial arts, the point of doing all of this is NOT to hurt your opponent! The object of a match is CONTROL....which why you can spar as hard as you want to, and still not be afraid. Injuring another wrestler is the same as loosing a match because what that means is that you lost control of both your body and your opponent's body as well. Because of this, so many things that we women have come to associate with the negative; aggression-competition-weight-close physical contact-sweat-gravity; are seen through a completely different mental filter. A 'fight' is no longer a 'FIGHT'...it's a game.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is generally considered to be the most effective/practical martial art there is (as the Ultimate Fighting Championships attest to) as if you know how to control an attacker on the ground you're pretty much guaranteed to have the upper hand in most fight type scenarios. That said, I don't call my classes 'women's self defense' because that presupposes that the woman is the 'victim' in any given scenario.

WHEN YOU CAN INTELLIGENTLY ASSESS A POTENTIALLY VIOLENT SITUATION FROM A POSITION OF POWER AND KNOWLEDGE YOU STOP BEING A 'VICTIM'. 'ATTACKERS' NO LONGER EXIST IN YOUR WORLD...ONLY 'OPPONENTS'.

Okay...I went off on a rant there...but what I wanted to say initially is that I WANT MORE WOMEN AT MY ACADEMY DARN IT!!!

And so...I'm proposing a WOMEN ONLY introductory submission wrestling workshop to take place on the afternoon of Saturday, January 8th at 3pm.

My goal isn't to make money with this, but to just get more women to come in and check out the school and possibly train with us on a regular basis. I'll probably ask for a $10 donation or something like that, but nothing major. If there's enough interest I'll be able to start up a regular women's grappling class which could meet a couple times a week at either our Oakland or El Cerrito Academy. And THAT is what I really am hoping to achieve!

Annnnyhoo-if anyone here is interested in checking out the workshop, or know of someone who might be-HELP ME GET THIS UP AND ROLLING WILL YA!?!?!? Pleeeeze? I've taught little mini-women's workshop type things over at UC Berkeley in the past, and the girls there has SO MUCH FUN that once I convinced them to start, getting everyone to STOP wrestling was even more difficult! I've won the US Open in BJJ twice, taken first at the Arnold Classic in both BJJ and Submission Wrestling, and beaten the World BJJ Champion in my weight division FOUR times (I couldn't get to Brazil and actually compete IN the World Championship tournament, which is why I can't claim the title); so what I'm getting at is that I AM qualified to teach and I do know my stuff when it comes to rolling around and getting sweaty ;-). Once again....this class is NOT about competing; it's about playing/having fun, getting a GREAT workout, and learning to not fear physical aggression...be it your own or someone else's.

THANK YOU!!! :-)

So, after being here for almost nine years, we had a fire several months ago and now the property management people that run the Vulcan lead by Rodrigo von Conta are forcing everyone to provide proof of renter's insurance with a $1M dollar indemnification clause for Vulcan Properties L.P. The deadline was Feb. 15th, 2004 and I haven't taken care of it yet myself. I have also heard that a number of other tenants haven't either.

The lease clearly states that Vulcan Properties will provide insurance if we don't provide them with proof so they can't evict us, technically speaking unless they can find some legal loop hole to break the contract. Any else have any thoughts in this situation?

I think it sucks because I'm totally broke but I guess from what I've heard from people in the bulding is that Penbrook is the cheapest with a $300 a year policy.

What really sucks is that management have been raising the rent price by 5% every year through some commercial lease loop hole and the legal rent increase in Oakland is only 3% per year for residental units but I guess this doesn't apply to the commercial lease that the Vulcan uses to sign tenants.

When I first moved in, the rent for our space was only $1200 a month. Now, its almost $1700 and we've been good tenants for all intents and purposes. Additionally, the building is not properly fire proofed and alarmed and the roof has leaked since I moved here some 8+ years ago from S.F.

Okay, enough ranting. I love living here in industrial, unconstructed glory of East Oakland but with the economy so bad in CA and especially in the Bay Area, I can't believe that they are still raising the rent on these spaces and then adding insult to injury, enforcing an insurance clause as a reactionary measure after not enforcing it for almost nine years.

Anyone else care to share? What is eveyone else's the plan for the renter's insurance situation? Is there a possibility of a group rate for multiple parties? If so, I'm in.

Take care,
